Main Minister Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday (April 15, 2025) that his government does not allow any protest or demonstration against the WAQF law (amendment) in any public place.
He recommended organizations such as All Assam Mensation Students ‘Union’ (AAMSU) to challenge the amended law at the Supreme Court and do not spill their anger on the street.
“This matter is at the Supreme Court. If someone has something against the WAQF law, it can turn to the top court,” Mr. Sarma told reporters.
“If some people go on the road against this act, others will do the same, which will lead to fighting. We don’t want any conflict in Assam. We all have to maintain our fraternal relationship and move the state forward,” he said.
The main minister said there was no point in discussing the WAQF law with AAMSU or another Muslim organization. “Given that this matter is already in the Supreme Court, let the judge discuss,” he added.
A week ago, the police detained the score protesters in some parts of central and western Assam. Demonstrators are heading to Guwahati to participate in a demonstration of organized AAMS against the amended WAQF law in Guwahati.
On Sunday, the assembly against the crime in Southern Assam Silchar changed violent with protesting tapped stones into security staff.
