Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis left his seat during the game at the City Ground, a move that foreshadowed a decision confirmed shortly after full-time. “Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that following a string of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect,” the club wrote on X. “The club will make no further comment at this time.” Appointed on 9 September, Postecoglou has failed to win any of his eight games in all competitions, with just one point from five Premier League matches. Forest are 17th in the league table, one point above the relegation zone, and are looking for their third manager of the season after Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked last month.

Postecoglou, who won the Europa League with Tottenham last season, expressed his confidence ahead of the Chelsea clash. He said in his pre-match press conference on Friday that if he gets time at the club, it will always end “with me and the trophy”. Defeat to Chelsea was a bleak end to his tenure as boss. Forest started well but failed to convert the chances. Teenager Josh Acheampong gave Chelsea the lead in the 49th minute, followed by Pedro Neto’s curling free-kick three minutes later. Captain Reece James scored late on to make it 3-0, his 200th appearance for the club. Chelsea, who were missing several first-team players including Cole Palmer, Benoit Badiashile and Enzo Fernandez, proved too strong for the home side. Nikola Milenkovic and substitute Igor Jesus missed chances for Forest, leaving Postecoglou disappointed on the touchline as fans began to leave the stadium.

Do you believe Nottingham Forest will find a better manager than Ange Postecoglou?
Former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche is said to be among the takeover candidates. Postecoglou’s short spell at Forest is now recorded as the shortest any permanent Premier League manager has left the club during a season.
