Andy Robertson has completed a free transfer to Tottenham Hotspurs after leaving Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur have officially confirmed the signing of experienced defender Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool. The 32-year-old Scotland international will officially pull on a Spurs shirt on July 1 after his highly decorated contract at Anfield expires.

The sensational switch marks a massive statement of intent for the north London club under manager Roberto De Zerbi, who managed to convince the seasoned left-back to fend off late interest from Italian heavyweights Juventus. Fresh from his pre-World Cup international camp in the United States, the newly minted Spurs full-back sent a direct video message to his new fan base detailing his excitement for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

“Hi Tottenham fans, I’m Andy Robertson, I’m not in Glasgow, I’m in America preparing for the World Cup. But I just wanted to send you a quick message to say I can’t wait to play for you, I can’t wait to meet you, I can’t wait to play in front of you for the first time in the stadium and I’m already looking forward to next season,” said Robert.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi was equally ecstatic to secure his first big signing of the summer window and highlighted the immediate standard-setting culture the veteran defender will bring to the training ground.

“Andy has been someone I have admired for many years and he will bring excellent technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team. He is a long-term proven winner at the highest level and is someone who can be a big player for us on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him and see the positive impact he has on everyone around him,” said Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi.

The emotional wheels of the transfer were set in motion on the final day of the Premier League season, when Liverpool supporters gave Robertson a passionate wave after the 1-1 draw with Brentford. Tottenham had previously attempted to sign the full-back in January, but Liverpool blocked the move in the winter window as they felt they did not have enough defensive cover at the time.

DE ZERBI’S DEFENSE OF RECONSTRUCTION

The Scotland captain’s arrival signals the start of a major overhaul of the squad under De Zerbi. Tottenham endured a miserable domestic campaign and survived a terrifying relegation scare by just two points on the final day of the season. Having identified a serious lack of leadership on the pitch and defensive solidity, the Italian tactician wasted no time in addressing the spine of his team to ensure they avoid a similar fixture next year.

With Robertson out the door, club bosses are already working on other targets. Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi has been heavily linked with a move to north London as his contract expires, while advanced talks have also taken place with Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke. Spurs also remain keen on Manchester City striker Savinho after failing to secure his signature last year due to Pep Guardiola’s decision to keep hold of the Brazilian.

THE END OF THE ANFIELD ERA

Robertson leaves Anfield as an undisputed modern legend, capping off a spectacular nine-year spell following his bargain move from Hull City in 2017. During his illustrious career on Merseyside, the energetic left-back made 378 appearances, provided 69 assists and won almost every major trophy available.

His impressive trophy cabinet includes two Premier League titles (2019/20 and 2024/25), two Champions League crowns (2018/19 and 2021/22), an FA Cup, two League Cups and a FIFA Club World Cup. De Zerbi will rely on that top-class pedigree to immediately transform a backline that leaked goals at an alarming rate last season.

– The end
