Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister Kinjarapau Atchannaidu has urged farmers to remain alert as the deep depression over the South Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a severe cyclone in the next 48 hours.
He warned that the system was moving west-northwest under very favorable conditions in the Bay of Bengal and directed the agriculture and district authorities to maintain high alert and take immediate precautionary measures.
In a review meeting with officials on Tuesday, the minister said field agriculture officials must visit villages and advise farmers on measures to protect standing crops, harvested produce and livestock. He noted that those who have already completed their rice harvest should move their yield to safer places without delay. The government is providing free tarps and district administrations have been instructed to quickly supply them to all eligible farmers to protect their produce from rain and strong winds.
He asked officials to issue continuous weather updates and intensify preparedness efforts in the entire Rayalaseema region and the entire North Coastal Andhra region, which is expected to experience a significant impact of the cyclone. With agricultural operations underway across the state, he stressed that precautionary measures are necessary to avoid crop losses during this critical period.
With sea conditions worsening, the India Meteorological Department warned fishermen not to venture into the waters, while those already at sea were advised to return to shore immediately. Disaster management teams have been told to remain alert and monitor developments closely. The minister said all departments must work together to ensure that farmers and the general public are not inconvenienced with the impending scheme.
