An English gymnast suffered a terrifying fall at the Commonwealth Games and was taken to hospital

England gymnast Gabriel Langton was taken to hospital after a terrifying fall during the men’s team gymnastics final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday.

During England’s final innings, Langton lost his grip on the crossbar and fell headlong to the floor, bringing the contest to a long halt as medical staff rushed to his aid.

The 19-year-old was unable to stand up on his own and was treated on the competition floor for several minutes before being placed on a stretcher. He was fitted with head and neck support before being carried out of the arena and taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

The sight left the arena stunned, with several gymnasts visibly shaken as Langton was attended to by medical staff. The competition was suspended while he was treated, with the focus shifting entirely away from the medal stakes.

Langton was called up to the England squad as a replacement for injured six-time Olympic medalist Max Whitlock. His fall came in the final over of the competition, in which England were chasing a fourth successive Commonwealth Games men’s team title.

The team had to put the terrifying incident behind them and finish the competition without their teammate.

England eventually settled for silver behind Canada, while Australia took bronze. But there was little appetite for celebration as England’s gymnasts waited for news of Langton.

“He’s fine from what we’ve heard,” his team-mate Luke Whitehouse said after the contest.

“Gymnastics is such a dangerous sport and things like this remind us of that. It’s one of those things you have to put out of your mind.”

LANGTON CONSCIOUS IN HOSPITAL

The England team later confirmed that Langton was conscious, moving and talking to doctors after being taken to hospital.

“We are grateful to the medical teams who responded immediately and provided assistance,” the England team said in a statement.

The positive news came a day later.

British Gymnastics confirmed that Langton underwent several scans in hospital, with the results described as “very positive”. He was cleared of serious complications from the injury and released to return to the team hotel under the care of the Team England medical team.

Langton was absent as his teammates collected their silver medals but was expected to rejoin the team to celebrate with them after his terrifying fall cast a shadow over England’s campaign.
