India’s victory in the 2026 FIFA T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad will be remembered for records and celebrations. For Ishan Kishan, however, the night carried a much more emotional layer. The goalkeeper revealed that he lost his cousin in a car accident just a day before the final and dedicated the Indian title to her.
The 27-year-old shared the heartbreaking news India’s big win over New Zealand in the final on Sunday, March 8. During the post-match press conference in Ahmedabad, Kishan said that he decided to enter the field and play the match in her memory.

“To be honest, I lost my cousin in a car accident yesterday before the match. I played well for her. I spoke to Hardik bhai, he said to put the team ahead. I dedicate this win to her and today is Women’s Day, so it’s even more special,” said Kishan.
The left-handed batsman added that a conversation with teammate Hardik Pandya helped him calm down ahead of the biggest game of the tournament despite the personal loss.
Kishan also reflected on the change in his mindset over the past year, explaining that he has tried to stop thinking about situations beyond his control and focus purely on performance.
“I stopped thinking too much. Just do your job and don’t think about things that are out of your control and that’s what Virat bhai always did,” Kishan said, referring to Virat Kohli.
The wicket-keeper batsman also recalled a light-hearted exchange with India captain Suryakumar Yadav from before the World Cup squad was finalised.
“When Surya bhai called, I took a screenshot and thought it was for the World Cup. He called and asked WC jeetwayega kya. I asked, ‘Aap bharosa karoge kya?’ and I said, “Karoonga.” He said chal kiya,” Kishan recalled.
HOW WAS ISHAN KISHAN 2026 T20 WC?
Kishan’s emotional night in the final was also the perfect end to what has been an excellent tournament for the Jharkhand batsmen.
The left-hander finished as the fourth-highest player in the T20 World Cup, amassing 317 runs in nine matches at a ridiculous strike rate of 193.29. Three half-centuries later, Kishan has firmly established himself as one of India’s most dangerous batsmen in the tournament.
His journey back to the national side has already been quite the comeback story. Kishan returned to India’s T20I set-up during the series against New Zealand after leading Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title as captain.
And it didn’t take him long to remind everyone what he could do.
It was in this series against New Zealand that Kishan smashed a stunning T20I century in the final match, a knock that more or less sealed his ticket to the World Cup squad.
Once the tournament started, Kishan became a constant presence in the Indian batting order alongside the likes of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, they form one of the competition’s most explosive top-orders.
Even in the final, he played his role perfectly. Kishan smashed a quickfire 54 off just 25 balls to keep the score high as India piled a massive 255-run target on New Zealand and put them on the back foot right from the start.
While his batting played a big role, Kishan’s fielding was also one of the key factors that led to India’s dominant win in the final. A sensational catch to dismiss Rachin Ravindra, followed by another right at the ropes to knock out the in-form Tim Seifert dealt two heavy blows to the New Zealand bowler.

India produced a dominant all-round performance in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
After being put in first, the Indian top order launched a strong attack on the New Zealand bowlers. Samson led the charge with a brilliant 89 off 46 balls while Abhishek Sharma finally rediscovered his touch with a blistering 52 off 21 deliveries.
Kishan continued his rich form with a quickfire half-century before Shivam Dube provided the late fireworks as he smashed an unbeaten 26 off just eight balls to take India to 255/5.
Chasing a massive target, New Zealand put up a brief fightback with Tim Seifert’s 52 off 26 balls, but India’s bowling attack soon picked up.
Jasprit Bumrah produced a sensational spell of 4/15 while Axar Patel took 3/27 to dismantle the Kiwi batting line-up.
India eventually sealed victory by 96 runs to lift their third T20 World Cup title. The win also made them the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup and the first host nation to win the tournament.
