Despite his personal tragedy, the German manager stepped up to the sidelines to ensure a result that wrapped up the title with three games remaining. Before kick-off the stadium held a minute’s silence for Flick’s father as the German manager had to be comforted by his staff.
“It was a tough match and I will never forget this day,” said an emotional Flick during the title celebrations that immediately followed the victory.
Flick paid tribute to his players and said he was proud to have such a good squad.
“I want to thank the team and all the people who supported us. The most important thing is that I am very proud to have such a good team. Thank you for everything.”
Flick, usually reticent, kept his victory speech short and sweet with his words, once again heaping all the praise on his players and thanking the fans.
“Thank you for that determination to fight in every game. I really appreciate it. My team is fantastic and I’m delighted. I’m so proud of my players. It’s exciting to be here with the fans, in the Clasico and beat Real Madrid. Now I think we have to celebrate,” said Flick.
‘THINK ABOUT HIDING YOUR FATHER FROM THE TEAM’
After the victory, the Barca team paid tribute to Flicka by lifting him into the air during the celebrations.
Flick revealed that when his mother broke the news of his father’s death, he was in a dilemma about whether to tell his players.
“My mother called me this morning and told me that my father died. I was thinking about whether to hide it or talk to my team. It’s like family to me.”
“What they have done is incredible, I will never forget this moment. I really appreciate working for this club and living in Barcelona, people are very kind to me,” said Flick.
Barca will look to sign off the season in good style by winning all three of their remaining games.
