An awareness rally on eye donation was held in Vizag

A person’s donated eyes can help restore sight to four people using modern techniques, said superintendent of the Government Regional Eye Hospital and program manager of the District Blindness Control Society Dr. V. Meenakshi. She was speaking during an eye donation awareness program organized as part of the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight observed from August 25 to September 8 in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

District Blindness Control Society and Mohsin Eye Bank jointly organized an awareness drive from Kali Mata Temple at RK Beach to YMCA. District Medical Officer and Health Officer Dr. P. Jagadeeswara Rao and Dr. Meenakshi left the gathering.

Dr. Meenakshi said there was a need for more public awareness about eye donation. She said that eyes can be donated within six hours of a person’s death and that various awareness programs will be conducted during the 15-day campaign.

Eye donation counselors distributed pamphlets and conducted an awareness program to pedestrians at RK Beach. The participants displayed banners and raised slogans emphasizing the importance of eye donation.

About 700 doctors, medical and nursing students, medical staff and representatives of hospitals and Mohsin Eye Bank attended the rally, according to organizers.
