An Assamese couple booked another birthday party at the Brahmaputra Bridge

A day after arresting 14 people for holding a midnight birthday party on the busy Brahmaputra river bridge, the Guwahati police charged a couple for a similar offence.

Surajit Mandal and his wife Bijaya Mandal, residents of Fatashil Ambari area of Guwahati, were arrested by Bharalumukh police station personnel on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) after a video of their birthday party at Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu went viral on social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ₹3,030 crore bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati in February. It is the first extradosed bridge in the Northeast region – somewhere between a traditional girder and a suspension bridge.

In the video, Mr. Mandal, accompanied by several friends, was seen celebrating his wife’s birthday by allegedly blocking part of the road and using electronic sparklers and firecrackers. The police did not specify the date of the celebration.

The couple was booked under sections 285 (danger or obstruction to public way or navigation), 270 (public nuisance) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. “The SUV used during the celebration has been seized,” said an officer at the Bharalumukh police station.

The approach to the bridge is about 300 meters from the police station.

Meanwhile, businessman Gautam Baruah and 13 others who attended a birthday party on the same bridge on the night of June 21 were released on bail on Wednesday (June 24, 2026).

“The accused were released after medical examinations, biometric verification and other procedural requirements, as the crimes involved were of a bailable nature,” said the police officer.
