While several doctors from Kashmir have made headlines for the wrong reasons, a team of astute doctors in Srinagar have reason to celebrate a rare feat.
An operation lasting over 11 hours saved an 18-year-old patient at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) hospital on November 17, marking remarkable feats in the region.
A marathon operation was carried out on a girl with a rare holocord intramedullary tumor of the spinal cord, which experts say is “one of the most complex spinal operations performed in the region”.
“Operating on a holocord tumor is like operating on the spinal cord from end to end. Even a millimeter error can result in major neurological deficits. This operation required utmost precision, teamwork and continuous concentration for many hours,” Dr told The Hindu. Abrar Ahad Wani, professor and head of the department of neurosurgery.
Dr. Wani said that while long-term surgeries are not routine, they are not that rare at SKIMS either. “This 11-hour holocord operation is among the most complex spine operations performed at SKIMS in recent years,” added Dr. Wani.
He said the patient is recovering well after surgery and is showing encouraging signs of neurological improvement.
“Performing an 11-hour procedure requires a combination of physical endurance, mental toughness, advanced surgical skills and perfect coordination between all operating teams. Neurosurgeons train for years to achieve the fine motor skills and concentration required for such demanding operations,” said Dr. Wani.
The patient (name withheld), who was from a modest background, could not afford treatment outside.
A family member of the patient said that the hospital did everything for our daughter for free. “She was in excruciating pain and losing strength day by day. Today she has hope again,” said a family member.
Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, Director, SKIMS, said the 11-hour operation reflects the highest level of skill, dedication and teamwork of our neurosurgery and anesthesia departments.
“I congratulate the team for bringing laurels to SKIMS. It epitomizes what SKIMS stands for: advanced, compassionate and equitable healthcare for the people of J&K.”
He said the successful outcome reaffirms SKIMS as the Valley’s premier center for advanced neurosurgical procedures and tertiary care excellence, “setting new standards in medical excellence and patient service.”
