
Three US states, including Washington, Alaska and Nebraska, recognized January 26 as India’s Republic Day on Sunday (local time) as the country celebrated the occasion with flag hoisting, parades and various other events.
The governors of the three states issued three separate statements saying that they recognized the importance of the day and that it strengthened bilateral relations with India.
Alaska, Washington, and Nebraska recognize Republic Day
In its statement, Alaska acknowledged that India, the world’s largest democracy, will celebrate its 77th Republic Day on January 26.
“Alaska recognizes the importance of strengthening bilateral relations with India, a nation with which we share the values of democracy, innovation and economic growth; and the Indian community is a significant contributor to Alaska’s cultural diversity, educational excellence and economic vitality,” Alaska said in a statement.

“Alaska and India continue to build strong partnerships in trade, technology, agriculture and cultural exchange, promoting mutual prosperity and understanding. The Consulate General of India in Seattle will host an Indian Republic Day celebration, highlighting the shared commitment to friendship and cooperation between Alaska and India,” he added.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy called on Alaskans to join Native Americans in celebrating Republic Day.
“I, Mike Dunleavy, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim January 26, 2026 as Indian Republic Day in Alaska and call on all Alaskans to join in recognizing the contributions of the Indian community and the enduring ties between Alaska and India,” he said.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson also signed a similar proclamation.

“I, Bob Ferguson, Governor of the State of Washington, do hereby proclaim January 26, 2026 as Indian Republic Day in Washington and call on all residents to join in recognizing the achievements of India and the Indian American community and the enduring friendship between Washington and the Republic of India,” he said.
Nebraska also recognized the importance of India to the state.
“I, Jim Pillen, Governor of the State of Nebraska, do hereby proclaim the 26th day of January, 2026, as Indian Republic Day in Nebraska, and call upon all citizens to join in recognizing the contributions of the Indian community and the enduring ties between Nebraska and India. In witness whereof, I have caused the Great State of Nebraska to come into being, and have hereunto set forth this twenty-second day of January, in the year of our Lord, two thousand twenty-six,” it read calling.
US Governors wish India on Republic Day
Montana (USA) Governor Greg Gianforte has extended his Republic Day wishes to the citizens of India.
“On behalf of the people of Montana, I would like to express our heartfelt wishes to the people of India. In Montana, we deeply appreciate the contributions of the Indian and Indian-American community to the cultural, educational and economic life of our state. Your dedication to innovation, learning and community enriches everything. As you commemorate India’s 77th Republic Day,” he told you in a health and prosperity video.

In another message, Governor of South Dakota (USA) Larry Rhoden congratulated India on Republic Day.
“Congratulations on the 77th anniversary of the Republic of India. I met Consul General Gupta twice last year and both meetings were very refreshing…I am confident that the United States and India will continue to build an even stronger relationship,” he said.
