AMMA crisis: Let the association be led by people with conviction and empathy, says actress Ansiba Hassan

Actress Ansiba Hassan proposed new leadership with conviction and empathy to the leadership of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) following the resignation of the 17-member executive committee led by Shwetha Menon, its first president, at the actors’ body’s general meeting on Sunday (June 21, 2026).

Ms Hassan, who resigned as joint secretary in February 2026 after accusing actor Tini Tom and a section of forum members of character assassination and passing communal remarks directed at her, said she had received justice as the AGM found the executive committee led by Ms Menon unfit to continue.

“Let the association be led by new leadership led by actors like Kunchacko Boban, Prithviraj, Asif Ali, Dhyan Sreenivasan,” she said, stating that the organization needed a group of people who would be able to listen to the issues raised by its members with a sense of empathy. “The new committee must take the initiative and bring the actors, including the survivors (of the actress assault case), back into the fold of the association,” she said, referring to the resignation of actors including Rima Kallingal, Remya Nambeesan and Parvathy Thiruvothu from the association after they claimed that “the association leader was as a survivor in the case of the accused7″1.

She claimed that the executive committee, which resigned on Sunday (June 21, 2026), failed to provide a proper explanation of the identified gaps in the association’s financial affairs. “They were not able to present a proper accounting of expenses and income before the general assembly,” she said. She thanked members who attended the AGM for providing the opportunity to voice their views and concerns.

Ms Hassan, who filed a police complaint against Mr Tom for alleged derogatory and communal remarks, said her legal battle would continue. Mr Tom has previously denied the allegations against him, saying there was a deliberate attempt to defame him.
