Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday (March 29, 2026) said the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Assam if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forms the government for a third consecutive term.
Addressing a rally in Tihu in western Assam, he said the UCC would have a provision to ban polygamy. “The aim of this move is to bring uniformity in civil laws and strengthen social reforms in Assam,” he said.
Uttarakhand was the first state to adopt and implement the UCC in the first half of 2025. Gujarat passed a bill to implement the UCC in March.
The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government had earlier in November 2025 passed the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Act, which sought to criminalize the practice of having more than one spouse regardless of religion.
The legislation was seen as a step towards implementing the UCC in the state.
