The Delhi High Court has directed the GST Council to hold a meeting at the earliest to discuss reducing GST rates on air purifiers amid rising air pollution, PTI reported.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela posted the matter to December 26 to allow the authorities’ lawyers to inform the court when the GST Council can meet.
Earlier in the day, the apex court expressed displeasure that the authorities were doing nothing to grant tax exemption to air purifiers in this “emergency situation” where the air quality index (AQI) is “very bad”.
Advocate Kapil Madan’s petition said that the purifiers cannot be considered a luxury item in view of the “extreme emergency crisis” caused by severe air pollution in Delhi.
