Amid concerns over Bengaluru’s poor pedestrian infrastructure, the three city corporations — South, West and North — that presented their first budgets on Saturday (March 28) prioritized pedestrian infrastructure and non-motorized mobility.
A key item in the South Corporation’s budget is the barrier-free elevated skywalk connecting the Banashankari Temple, the metro station and the Traffic and Transit Management Centre, which is estimated to cost ₹32 crore. In addition, the company has designed 18 skywalks under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
An allocation of ₹50 crore has been earmarked for the construction of footpaths, upgrading of footpaths and improvement of junctions. The South Corporation has also outlined plans to develop non-motorized transport (NMT) corridors, integrating pedestrian paths, cycle lanes and safe pedestrian crossings.
West Corporation has proposed an even larger network of skywalks, with plans to build them in 50 locations using advertising-based revenue models. It has also earmarked ₹50 crore for skywalks, upgradation of footpaths and development of junctions. In addition, cycle tracks are planned at at least five places in each division, including around Nayandahalli Lake.
Meanwhile, the North Corporation has earmarked ₹18 crore for the repair and reconstruction of nearly 1,000 km of footpaths across wards at a cost of ₹25 crore per ward. Another ₹50 crore has been earmarked for the construction of a skywalk and improvement of pedestrian crossings.
