American vice president JD Vance described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “hard negotiator” and accused the new Delhi of taking advantage of America, predicting that India could be among the first countries to conclude a trade agreement to avert mutual tariffs.
In an interview with Fox News on Thursday (May 1, 2025) Mr. Vance said that “good negotiations” were now with India about tariffs.

India is one of the countries that negotiate with the United States to avoid high imports, most of them right now, announced by President Donald Trump.
“Modi, Prime Minister, is a hard negotiator, but we will balance this relationship again, so the president does what he is doing,” Vance said during the interview.
“Is India’s first agreement?” Vance was asked in an interview for “special news” Fox News.
“I don’t know if it will be your first business, I think it would definitely be among the first shops. Soon the presidential appearance, we have negotiations with Japan, Korea, we have negotiations with some people in Europe and of course we have good negotiations in India,” Vance said.
US President Trump announced the sweeping of mutual tariffs on a number of countries, including India and China, April 2. On April 9, however, until 9 July this year announced the 90 -day suspension of these tariffs, with the exception of those in China and Hong Kong, as about 75 countries approached America for business agreements.
10% of the basic tariff deposited on countries 2. However, April remains valid, except for 25% of duties for steel, aluminum and automatic components.
“What the President said is that we just want to balance the trade. So some of the interviews I had in India, for example, I think most Americans may not know, may not appreciate it, we have great agricultural products.”
“Our farmers are doing great things, but the Indian market is effectively closed to US farmers. This means that the fact that American farmers and American consumers more depend on foreign competitors to grow the food we eat.”
“What will our India an agreement be, in principle, I think it is open to India’s American technology. It will open to India to American farmers. It will create more good American jobs. And it is a kind of business agreement that Donald Trump loves.”
“It’s not an anti-shop. It’s an anti-unfair trade. It’s not quite a kind of trade where foreign competitors use us, Indians, let’s be honest, used us for a very long time,” Mr. Vance said.
The new Delhi and Washington are now organizing negotiations on the sealing of a bilateral trade agreement, as agreed during PM Modi interviews with Mr. Trump in Washington DC in February. The trade agreement is expected to solve various problems, including tariffs and market access.
