‘American history shaped by immigrants…,’ India reacts to JD Vance’s comments amid H-1B visas, green card freeze | Today’s news

In response to the US government’s move to ban several tech giants from the green card program, the State Department said Friday that “Perm applications do not apply to H-1B visa holders” and “the steps announced by the US do not support the shared ambitions of both countries.”

“We are aware of the US Department of Labor’s decision regarding the Permanent Labor Certification Program (PERM) for certain companies. It should be noted that PERM is different from the H-1B visa program. The suspension of PERM applications does not in itself affect the validity of existing H-1B visas or the status of H-1B visa holders and their dependents as eligible employees/respectively cards may have some impact on the company,” the department said in a statement

The ministry further said that talent mobility between the two nations creates significant value for both economies and the announced moves do not support common ambitions.

“It should also be clear that talent mobility adds value to both economies. While it creates opportunities for Indians, it equally helps US companies with top talent, innovation, research, productivity, competitiveness and job creation, in addition to creating wealth for US shareholders. So this is an area of huge mutual benefit for both countries and we expect all stakeholders in the process to be able to appreciate this fact,” the MEA said.
