Amarnath Yatra was suspended on Thursday from the camps Pahalgam and Baltal after almost two days of continuous collision in the Kashmir valley. The decision came after the landslide in the middle along the Baltal route AmarNath Yatra in the Ganderbal district in Jammu and Kashmir killed one woman of the pilgrim and injured three more.
Four pilgrims were washed downhill on Wednesday evening by landslide in Railtaphri along the Baltal axis to the Holy Cave, PTI officials said.
The injuries were hurried to the Baltal Base Camp Hospital, where one woman was announced on his arrival, said officials and added that the deceased was identified as Sona Bai (55), resident of Rajasthan.
What are the shooting stones?
During the monsoon, the heavy downpour releases rocks and soil on steep slopes, causing stones to collapse on the road (known as shooting stones) and trigger landslides that can block or damage the highway.
Shooting and landslides along the Jammu – Srinagar motorway are a recurring problem, especially during the monsoon season, when the region is experiencing severe precipitation.
Strong rainfall affects repairs
Meanwhile, the authorities threw themselves into repairs on the pilgrimage route, which was hit because of a continuous downpour, informed by the divisional commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri.
“Given the continuous rains in the last few days, urgent repairs and maintenance must be carried out on the tracks. Therefore, it has been decided that no movement will be allowed from the two base camps today,” he said.
The Division Commissioner also said that pilgrims can descend from the Baltal Basic Camp, provided that the appropriate security teams are deployed.
“Yatris, who remained in the Panchtarni camp during the previous night, can proceed to the Baltal under the adequate commitment of BRO and Mountain Rescue teams,” he said.
So far, more than 2,47 lakh pilgrims have been compliant in the sanctuary of the Holy Cave during the Shri AmarNathji Yatra 2025, according to the Ministry of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) Kashmir.
AmarNath Yatra is an annual pilgrimage to AmarNath, where devotion offers prayers of Lord Shiva. The 38 -day annual pilgrimage of AmarNath in 3,880 meters high sanctuary of the Holy Cave in South Kashmir began 3 July and will be closed on August 9.
