Aluva Municipal Chairman Saiji Jolly Moothedan.
Saiji Jolly Moothedan, the newly elected Chairperson of the Aluva Municipality, likes to keep things simple and realistic with the administration. The Congress councilor in her third term, who was vice-chairwoman in the last council, says that her priority will be to finish the ongoing development projects in time, especially the renovation of the market area, before they make big promises.
Ms Moothedan said the council’s immediate concerns would be to ensure the smooth running of the famous Sivarathri celebrations at the Siva Temple on the banks of the Periyar and to find a solution to the frequent burst pipes in the city. She said cleaning of Aluva town and completion of ongoing projects, including the reconstruction of the town hall and the reconstruction of the Thottakkattukara mini market, are also among the issues that need to be addressed. She also stressed the need to fix the traffic snarl in the city.
“There will of course be high expectations when the new council takes over. We welcome new proposals from all quarters, but we can only take decisions on new projects after considering all aspects, including environmental concerns,” Ms Moothedan added.
According to her, the municipality will continue to focus on waste disposal at its source. She said more people would be encouraged to use the Robobin stall, a self-disposal facility set up under the city’s public-private partnership model. She said she will try to address the plight of people who have been selected as beneficiaries of the Life Mission housing program but have yet to receive funds.
Newly elected Deputy Chairman Fassil Hussain said it will be necessary to design and implement projects to increase the local body’s own revenue. In the previous council, he was the chairman of the standing committee for education, art and sport.
