
Almost a year after the international port of Vishinjam launched commercial operations, the port was set up by a record volume of more than 8 scraps of equivalent units (TEU) (Teus) by facilitating anchoring approximately 385 ships. The port is third at the national level after the port of Mundra, the flagship of the port of Adani Ports & Sez Ltd. and Jawaharlal nezru port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai. However, the port comes first compared to private ports in the southern and eastern zone in this fiscal year in terms of handling the volume of cargo.
The port, which launched commercial operations on a limited scale during the five -month trial period, which began on 12 July 2024 and subsequently full commercial operations on December 3, redefined the naval business from the south shortly after its introduction. According to the final volume of Indian private ports in the southern and eastern zones in June, the port of Vishinjam is far ahead of other ports, although closely followed by the International Port Chennai with 82,829 TEU and Cochin Port with 81 007.
According to sources in the port, the full commercial operation of the port Vishinjam was also beneficial for port cochin due to the effect of spilling. The port, which recently received environmental permits from the Ministry of the Environment and Forest, will increase its capacity by setting up other infrastructure facilities within the second and third phase of development. Port concessionaire, Adani Vishinjam Ports Private Ltd. (AVPPL), investing around 10,000 crore in the expansion of the translation port.
Upon completion of the second and third phases, the port appears the capacity of handling of containers to 30 Lakh Teus (twenty feet of equivalent units) from 10 Lakh TEUS in phase I. Using automated systems, the port capacity can also be increased to 45 LAKHS Teus containers per year.
