The Allahabad High Court termed it a “disturbing trend” and criticized the Uttar Pradesh police for “pursuing couples who are virtually investigating marriages” rather than investigating crimes “with which they have their hands full”.
In their April 21 order, Justice JJ Munir and Justice Tarun Saxena directed the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) to take remedial measures to address the practice of police hounding young couples who have married of their own free will.
