Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani was killed in Israeli strikes targeting Iran’s senior leadership, marking a major escalation in the ongoing conflict, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said, according to Israeli media. There has been uncertainty following Israel’s overnight strikes and claims that some of Iran’s top officials were “eliminated” in the strikes.
Reports also indicate that Gholam Reza Soleimani, head of the Revolutionary Guards’ Basij volunteer units, was also killed in the same wave of overnight attacks.
“The Larijans and Commander Basij were eliminated overnight and joined the leader of the destruction program, Khamenei, and all the eliminated members of the axis of evil in the depths of hell,” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement this morning.
Who was Ali Larijani?
Ali Larijani was the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and was also the right-hand man of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Khamenei was killed in the initial joint strikes by the United States and Israel on February 28. Since Khamenei’s killing, Ali Larijani has become one of the country’s leading figures.
