Manchester United Manager Ruben Amorim Addresses Alejandro Garnacho’s Incident
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has revealed that Alejandro Garnacho has taken responsibility for his actions following a recent incident during the Red Devils’ match. The young winger reportedly left the field early after being substituted in United’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.
The game took a challenging turn when United were reduced to 10 men after Patrick Dar was sent off in the first half. This forced Amorim to make a tactical decision, replacing Garnacho with Noussair Mazraoui to bolster the defense. However, Garnacho appeared visibly frustrated and left the tunnel instead of joining his teammates on the bench to watch the remainder of the match.
Amorim addressed the situation during a press conference, emphasizing the importance of learning from such incidents.
“He came to me the next day. It was actually quite amusing because he showed up at my office. I investigated the matter and found out that he went to the dressing room to change his wet clothes, watched the game from there instead of the bench, and then left after the match concluded. So, there’s no major issue here,” Amorim explained, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
Amorim acknowledged that Garnacho’s reaction was understandable but stressed the need for younger players to be mindful of their behavior, especially at a club of Manchester United’s stature.
“He’s a young player still learning. The important thing is that he came to me the next morning. We have to recognize that these small things, like leaving the field early—Joshua Zirkzee did something similar in December against Newcastle—need to be handled with care. The context was different, but the action was the same,” Amorim added.
“We must consider the situation, the context, and the players’ ages. Of course, it could have been handled better. Perception is crucial here, especially at a big club like Manchester United. But we’ve dealt with it, and now we’re moving forward.”
Amorim also revealed that Garnacho has been asked to buy dinner for the entire team as a gesture of accountability.
“I told him that at Manchester United, everything matters—especially perception in a big club. So, he’ll pay for dinner for the whole team, and that’s the end of it,” Amorim stated.
The manager went on to express his understanding of the players’ frustrations but reiterated the importance of managing emotions in high-pressure situations.
“I know players well—I was one myself. I understand the frustration of being substituted, especially when you’re in the flow of the game. It’s tough to deal with, but it’s part of the job. My role is to help them become better footballers and better professionals,” Amorim concluded.
The incident highlights the challenges young players face in managing their emotions while navigating the demands of top-tier football. Amorim’s approach to the situation reflects his focus on mentorship and growth, ensuring that Garnacho and other emerging talents continue to develop both on and off the pitch.
