The coastal areas in Alappuzha are on alert after the containers from the dragged MSC Elsa 3 began to wash ashore.
On Monday, two containers werehed in Tharajilcadav near Arattupuzha. Both containers were damaged after the sea wall hit.
Minister of Agriculture P. Praad, district collector Alex Varghese and other officials visited the area and reviewed the situation. Mr. Prasad said that the materials in two containers were identified as cotton. “The inspection of customs officials confirmed that containers contain non-hazard materials. Steps were taken to quickly remove containers and their content.
The state government has issued a high warning because some containers on the ship are reported to contain a dangerous cargo. The Minister stated that a warning was issued to ensure that the public did not come into contact with any dangerous materials. “There are no dangerous materials in the containers that have been washed to the shore so far. But we should remain vigilant, because more containers float in the sea and can be washed as shore,” Prasad said.
The Council for Control of Pollution has launched measures to master any oil leaks from the ship that could reach the coast. “Given the fears of oil leakage into the sea, an emergency meeting was convened on Sunday. In the district, the Coast Grama Panchayats was advice. Officials from income, fishing and local government departments will be supervised together.
Mr. Prasad said that steps were taken to prevent the oil from spreading to additional water points through the mouth. “Water samples have been collected and the Council for Control of Pollution is carried out by tests,” he added.
