Ajit Agarkar will not seek extension, BCCI will decide on new chief selector after October 4

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said on Wednesday that the board has “plenty of time” to decide on the next chairman of the men’s selection committee as Ajit Agarkar’s three-year tenure ends on October 4.

Agarkar has already informed the BCCI that he does not wish to seek an extension to his contract, which would end his tenure as Chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee.

The former Indian all-rounder announced his decision to the board on September 18 with The BCCI subsequently authorizes its office bearers to accept the challenge of the future of the selection committee.

Saikia, however, said the board was in no rush to announce Agarkar’s successor and would take a decision after the incumbent’s contract expires.

“As far as Ajit Agarkar is concerned, his tenure will end on October 4 and we have enough time till October 4,” Saikia told PTI Videos.

“We will take a decision on the vacancy that will be there after October 4. Once the BCCI takes any decision, we will definitely announce it publicly,” he added.

Agarkar took over as the chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023, succeeding Chetan Sharma. His tenure included India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024 and the Champions Trophy title in 2025.

The BCCI is now set to start the process of filling the post after October 4. The next chairman of the selection committee will inherit a team preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, making the appointment important to India’s white-ball plans.

Saikia also spoke about India’s Asian Games campaign and hoped that the men’s team could emulate the women’s side that won the cricket gold medal in Japan.

“We are very proud, the country is rejoicing for their amazing win. The women’s team has done really well and continues their winning streak for more than one year,” said Saikia.

The Indian men’s team will begin their campaign on September 28, with the final scheduled for October 3.

“We hope the men will follow the same path as the women’s team in Japan. I hope the country will have another unique opportunity to celebrate on October 3,” Saikia added.
