The All India United Trade Union Center (AIUTUC) will launch a ‘Belagavi Chalo’ protest on December 9 during the winter session of the legislature to press for regularization of contractual and outsourced workers serving in various government departments for over two to three decades.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, AIUTUC State Secretary K. Somashekar Yadgiri said that over three million workers in 43 government departments, urban local bodies and panchayat institutions continue to work on outsourcing and contract system; and many of them did not get minimum wages, provident fund, ESI coverage, he added.
Mr Somashekar said the government’s plan to shut down outsourcing agencies had caused confusion among long-serving outsourcing workers. New recruitment rules, including relaxed age limits and revised eligibility criteria, have only heightened workers’ fears. A number of workers no longer met the new requirements. After spending decades in the service as contract and outsourced workers, denying them permanent employment was unfair, he added.
He called upon all contract and outsourced workers across the state to participate in the protest to be held in Belagavi on December 9.
The union’s charter of demands includes the regularization of all contract and outsourced workers in their current positions; continuation of their services until the regularization process is completed; no existing contract worker should be terminated; as well as the implementation of revised minimum wages approved by the Minimum Wage Advisory Committee with retroactive effect from 2022.
