All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary Amarjeet Kaur on Sunday called for a sustained movement to protect the rights of workers and other labor sections, alleging that the BJP-led dispensation policy at the Center was undermining their interests.

Addressing a public meeting at Circus Grounds in Karimnagar on the opening day of the three-day 4th State Conference of AITUC, Ms. Kaur said workers, farmers and youth were facing several challenges, especially in the areas of employment, education and livelihood.

She said the recent student agitation at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi reflected growing concerns among the youth about the lack of quality public education and job opportunities.

Ms Kaur alleged that the BJP-led exemption was weakening labor law and favoring a select group of corporate houses at the expense of employee interests.

Apart from protecting the country’s constitutional values and secular structure, it called for mass mobilization and continuous struggles to defend the hard-fought rights of the working class and protect the interests of farmers, women, youth and other sections.

She said the three-day state conference would address issues facing the working class and develop strategies for collective action to protect the rights of workers and other working masses.

Earlier, workers, including daily wage workers and agricultural labourers, took part in a rally in the city under the auspices of AITUC to mark the launch of the conference.

CPI state secretary and Kothagudem MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao and others spoke.
