Mamata’s All India Trinamool Congress legislator sustained injuries when his vehicle was attacked late on Saturday night. Bibhas Sardar, MLA from Baruipur Purba in South 24 Parganas, was attacked on his way home in Joynagar from his MLA office. Mr. Sardar said his vehicle was stopped by a group of persons while he was returning to his residence.

“These people threatened to kill me and said they would send me to the crematorium. They also taunted me for becoming a big devotee of Mamata Banerjee. One of them then threw a brick at the windshield of my car. Somehow I managed to get out,” the MLA said.

Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress faction shared photos of the attack and sought that “the perpetrators be identified and strict action must follow”.

.@BJP4Bengal’s politics of intimidation exposed again! Brutal attack on Shri Bibhas Sardar in Joynagar accompanied by death threats for his support of @MamataOfficial raises serious questions about the growing culture of political violence. When political differences are answered with bricks, threats and attempts on someone’s life, DEMOCRACY ITSELF IS UNDER ATTACK! Perpetrators should be identified and strict action should be taken. But will the police act? This has now become the biggest issue as they seem to be more busy serving their masters than maintaining law and order in the state.

“@BJP4Bengal politics of intimidation exposed again! Brutal attack on Bibhas Sardar in Joynagar accompanied by death threats for his support @MamataOfficial raises serious questions about the growing culture of political violence,” AITC’s Mamata posted on social media. In a post on social media, the party said that when political differences are answered with bricks, threats and attempts on someone’s life, “democracy itself is under attack!”.

Several leaders of Mamata Banerjee’s faction have been attacked since the BJP came to power. Just a few days ago, Mamata AITC spokesperson and MLA Kunal Ghosh was attacked twice on two consecutive days and his vehicle was damaged.

After the alleged attack, Mamata AITC General Secretary and Diamond Harbor MP Abhishek Banerjee spoke to Mr. Sardar over phone, inquired about his health and assured him of all necessary help.

On Sunday, police officers visited Mr. Banerjee’s residence and served him a summons for another round of questioning in connection with the Camac Street party billboard case.

This is the second police visit to Diamond Harbor MP’s Kalighat home in a week for the same purpose. On October 7, Mr. Banerjee was not present at home and no one was available to receive the notice. A team from the Shakespeare Sarani police station reached Mr. Banerjee’s Kalighat residence to serve him a notice in connection with a complaint filed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The Trinamool leader was asked to appear before the police on Monday (October 12).

On August 27, police and KMC officials were involved in a scuffle when they tried to visit Mr. Banerjee’s Camac Street office. Three FIRs have been registered at the Shakespeare Sarani police station in connection with the incident.

“The BJP (government) has stooped so low that the notice was served even after Mahalaya, when Durga Puja is just days away,” Mr. Ghosh said.
