The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has received around 450 applications from aspirants who want to contest the upcoming municipal and corporation elections in Telangana, party sources said.
On January 15, the party leadership directed aspiring candidates to download applications from the official Facebook page and send them to the city chairman. These would then be handed over to the party headquarters in Darussalaam.
After the application was closed, the party leadership consulted with district and city officials. Sources said party president and Hyderabad Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi is personally working with leaders of the organizations to assess the ground-level feedback and potential electoral prospects of the candidates.
The leadership, a party functionary said, has largely finalized the list of candidates.
Party sources said the observers were likely to be appointed in the next few days. These teams are expected to include legislators, corporators from Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and party workers. Observers will be tasked with overseeing campaign coordination and improving coordination.
According to party functionaries, AIMIM has a history of representation in municipal bodies. This includes the post of Deputy Mayor in Nizamabad Municipal Corporation, Chairman position in Bhainsa Municipality. In 2014, the party also had a vice president in Adilabad in 2014.
The party maintains a presence in Karimnagar, Metpally, Korutla and Jagtial as well as in Sangareddy and Zaheerabad. Local party units in these areas remained active and the cadre was also active.
Both Mr. Owaisi and legislator Chandrayangutta Akbaruddin Owaisi are expected to campaign for the party’s candidates, the sources added.
The party was in high spirits as it had won 125 seats in the recent Maharashtra civic polls and is confident of a strong run in the Telangana civic polls.
