In response to a nationwide call by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) State Committee, the Kalaburagi district unit recently staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kalaburagi.
The farmers demanded immediate intervention of the state government on a number of issues affecting farmers.
After the demonstration, AIKS leaders submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah through the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
AIKS State Working President Maula Mulla, District President Bhimashankar Madiyal, District Secretary Mohammad Chaudhari and several others participated in the protest.
Speaking to reporters, District President Bhimashankar Madiyal said heavy rain has devastated both commercial and food crops in several districts and the state government must not delay the compensation any further.
“The state must immediately publish lists of damaged crops and compensation for farmers in villages. We want transparency and we want timely payments,” he said.
He also criticized the delay in opening shopping centers and said farmers were being forced into emergency sales.
“Harvest is already over. Without functional shopping centres, private traders are exploiting the helpless farmers. State government must start procurement operations immediately,” he added.
Mr. Madiyal raised concern over large tracts of land acquired for industrial, residential and infrastructure projects remaining unused even after several years and demanded that the land unused for its intended purpose within five years of acquisition be either returned to the original owners or allotted to eligible landless families.
The memorandum submitted by AIKS highlighted several other demands. He urged the state government to speed up regularization of bagair hukum land, noting that thousands of applications are pending due to administrative indifference. Many landless cultivators, it said, continue to live in limbo without property rights.
Reiterating its long-standing demand for a complete crop loan waiver, the organization said repeated cycles of drought, excessive rainfall and disproportionate support prices have trapped farmers in unsustainable debt.
AIKS leaders urged the state government to take these issues seriously and initiate immediate action, saying the survival of thousands of farm families depended on early intervention.
