Members of the All India Kisan Kheth Mazdoor Sanghatan (AIKKMS) staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Yadgir on Tuesday demanding the reinstatement of the repealed Mahatma Gandhi’s National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The protesters said that the Union government has usurped the right to work under the erstwhile MGNREGA by introducing a new law, the VB-G RAM G Act.
The previous law was introduced by the then Prime Minister headed by Manmohan Singh to provide jobs for the rural people. However, they argued that the new law created insecurity among workers due to its inappropriate and unconstitutional conditions.
The Union government, instead of providing more job security and wages based on the work assigned to it, has burdened the state governments by asking them to share 40% of their own funds to add to their 60% share, they said.
But this is not only unscientific but also a drastic step to directly attack the state’s financial situation, they said.
Therefore, AIKKMS demands that the Union Government should immediately repeal the VB-G RAM G Act and restore MGNREGA to ensure continuous jobs for the rural people, they said.
They later submitted a memorandum to the concerned authorities.
