Doctors in Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims-Delhi) refuted claims connecting vaccines against Covid-19 with sudden deaths in young adults in the country.
This comes against the background of the recent demands of the Chief Minister of Karnatak Siddaramaiaha, stating that the Covid vaccines were associated with sudden deaths as a result of cardiac arrest in young adults in the Hassan State District.
Premier Medical Institution in the country announced that her studies had not found any connection, instead attributed these tragic incidents to lifestyle factors such as smoking, high blood pressure and stress.

The elderly Aiims doctors emphasized the key role that these vaccines played in saving their lives during the pandemic, and noted that studies were taking place in order to determine the causes of sudden unexplained deaths. Scientists at the AIIMS pathological department are currently conducting genomic studies to find the inexplicable causes of death in approximately 25% of cases concerning young individuals where no apparent cause was originally identified.
The pharmaceutical industry also dealt with the safety of the vaccine and revealed doubts about effectiveness.
Extensive studies are taking place
Dr. Abhishek Yadav, another professor at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Aiims, described in detail two studies conducted by its department. Retrospective analysis from 2018 to 2022, comparing data on pre-and ending, found that “in sudden cardiac deaths in cases reported in the department,” no growth “.
The second, ongoing study launched in 2023 in cooperation with the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and scheduled for another year and a half, aims to collect multiple samples for scientifically verified results. This study has so far examined approximately 230 cases of death, gathered a family history, conducted genomic and DNA levels, and used virtual autopsy.
Dr. Yadav said that this second study also “found no connection between a vaccine against Covid and sudden deaths”.

Research has categorized cases up to two age groups: 18-45 years and 45-65 years. Dr. Yadav said that coronary arteries were identified as the most common historical factor, with more than 50% of these cases associated with lifestyle and substance abuse, such as alcohol and smoking.
The Pathological Department of AIIMS continues genomic studies with the remaining 25% of unexplained cases.
Dr. Sudheer Arava, a professor at the AIIMS pathology department, explained that the study of 230 young individuals brought to the forensic department to a heart attack as the most common cause of death (50%), often associated with the risk of lifestyle such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, stress and obesity. “In 25% of cases, no identifiable cause of death has been determined, and scientists examine potential molecular changes. The Provisional Report submitted by the ICMR suggests that nearly 50% of the deaths studied were caused by cardiac infarction.”
The effectiveness of the vaccine and the global context
Dr. Sanjay Rai, a professor at the Department of Community Medicine in Aiims, said the Covishield vaccine (developed Oxford – Astrazenca) showed an effectiveness of 62.1%. He stressed that various regulators approved 37 different Covid-19 vaccines, while the World Health Organization (WHO) approved approximately 12 and used various technologies. For example, Kavaxin Bharat Biotech uses traditional technology, while Covishield and Russian Sputnik V are based on an adenovir vector.
More than 13 billion doses of vaccines have been administered worldwide, with a country such as the United States, completing fourth doses. The WHO now recommends vaccination for all ages of six months or more, especially for newer variants.
Dr. Karan Madan, Associate Professor at the Department of Lung Medicine, confirmed that Covid-19 vaccines were “highly effective and helpful in reducing mortality during the pandemic”. He emphasized their role “the only possible measure to save lives” at that time and provided “immense benefits” to prevent excessive deaths. Dr. Madan also referred to a study of sudden cardiac death, which found “no clear connection” using the vaccine.
Sudarshan Jain, General Secretary of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), underlined the role of India as a knowledge -based sector, representing 60% of global vaccine production. He stated that Covid vaccines are “well documented and strictly tested according to regulatory processes”, warning that “misinformation and distortion of facts endanger public health and undermine confidence in science and patient care around the world”.
The Indian Association of Vaccine Manufacturers also said that all COVID-19 vaccines in India have received an emergency use permit based on large foreclinical and human clinical evaluation and showed positive results for safety, efficiency and immunogenicity.
COVID infections have been on a declining trend after demonstrating permanent increase in the last few weeks. On Thursday, the country’s active case in the country fell to 1,290 out of 1,691 cases without reporting death in the last 24 hours. The total number of deaths related to COVID-19 is 146 this year. The current spread is associated with the sub-variars of the omicron nb.1.8.1 and LF.7.
