All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) National President PK Srimathi Teacher has called upon women to walk the path of struggle for a better life for future generations.
Ms. Srimathi, who was re-elected as the national president of the association in the 14th national conference, said that for the better life of children, women should raise their voices loudly to secure their rights. The rights enjoyed by the current generation were the result of struggles fought earlier and the same pace should continue in the future.
She recalled the many struggles that AIDWA had waged since its inception and said that the struggles waged with commitment and unity would continue. Stating that the Left government in Kerala was moving forward with a gender equality approach, she lamented that several states, especially those ruled by the BJP after Manusmiriti, were taking away women’s right to life.
Future struggles would focus on the right to life, as well as education, health care, employment and housing. Most states in the country lagged behind in development indicators in many sectors, while Kerala led the way with alternative policies and became the first state to eradicate extreme poverty.
She questioned why other states were not implementing social welfare programs for women and other vulnerable groups when Kerala was able to do so and urged women to raise their voices strongly in this regard. She appreciated the statement of AIDWA members from Telangana that though their numbers seemed small, their hard work and tireless efforts were instrumental in the success of the conference.
