A recent increase of 50 GBP in domestic liquefied petrol gas prices (LPG), members of the All India Democratic Women Association (Aidwa) and Indian Democratic Youth Federation in India (Dyfi) presented a symbolic protest before the BSNL office.
Demonstrators stated that the price of a domestic LPG cylinder by 14.2 kg was increased from 803 to 853 GBP, which stressed household budgets, especially among families with low income.
As part of the demonstration, women knew about the LPG cylinders, wore black veils and sat around and sang Oppari (traditional lament), symbolically mourning increasing costs of basic commodities.
The protest was led by the district secretary of Aidwa Saraswathi and the district secretary Dyfi Sethupathy.
Member of the CPI (M) K. Balabharathi Committee criticized the Center’s economic policies and stated that he had deepened the financial burden for women and households of the working class. It demanded an immediate return of an increase in the price of 50 GBP and urged the government to take steps to control inflation, especially as regards basic items such as cooking, food and fuel.
