AIDSO members presented protests in various districts of the region against the Plan of the State Government to introduce 15% of NRI quotas at the Government Faculty of Medicine.
On Wednesday in Dharwad, students gathered in Vivekanand Circle and screamed slogans against the state government. They required the abolition of the NRI quota at government medical faculties that would see fees up to 25 lakh per student.
District Secretary of Shashikala Meti said that the government accepted anything against the introduction of NRI quotas at government medical faculties in the State in the State of 2025-26.
This will postpone poor medical students. The place for poor merit students decreases in higher education in general and specifically in government institutions.
15% of seats are already given within the quota of the whole India. If NRI students are provided with another 15% of seats, only 140 seats will be left to the State students at a dose of 200 students. This is not acceptable, she said.
Government Faculty of Medicine are established to provide quality university education to deserved and talented students regardless of their financial background. NRI quota is nothing but a secret gateway to undeserved rich students to gain medical education. Hundreds of talented working class students, poor and middle families who want to serve companies as doctors will be denied this opportunity by reserving places for wealthy NRI students.
At a time when 12,447 teaching functions lie at government medical faculties in the state, the government should prefer the occupation of these functions and improving infrastructure. Strengthening the faculty and facilities is a real need, she said.
She warned that this decision was a dangerous step towards transforming government universities into profit centers as well as private institutions.
