Five AIADMK functionaries were arrested by the Natrampalli police in Tirupattur on Tuesday for scuffling with a group of people protesting against the verification of nomination papers filed by former AIADMK minister KC Veeramani for the Jolarpet assembly constituency for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The arrested persons have been identified as K. Mahalingam, 60, S. Prabhu, 42, B. Susikaran, 39, R. Thirumurthy, 29, and N. Jayaprakash, 28. They are residents of Tirupattur and party functionaries in the area.
Initial investigation revealed that along with party cadre and functionaries, Mr. Veeramani visited the taluk office in Natrampalli to know whether the nomination papers filed by him were accepted by the Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) for Jolarpet Assembly constituency.
The police said G. Ramamurthy, a Vellore real estate dealer, and his supporters came to the taluk office to register objections to the scrutiny of Mr. Veeramani’s nomination papers. Mr. Ramamurthy alleged that Mr. Veeramani had understated the value of his total assets in the affidavit filed by him.
The police said that when Mr. Veeramani was restraining himself in the taluk office, supporters of the AIADMK leader allegedly assaulted Mr. Ramamurthy and his men inside the taluk office premises. The Natrampalli police, who were deployed to prevent any untoward incident during the verification of nomination papers, immediately intervened and secured Mr. Ramamurthy.
Subsequently, Mr. Ramamurthy and his men were admitted to the Taluk Government Hospital in Ambur town, where doctors said the condition was stable. A case has been registered. A probe is underway.
It is to be noted that Mr. Ramamurthy filed a complaint with the EC in April 2021 alleging that the former AIADMK minister had misrepresented his assets in an affidavit submitted to the EC to contest the Assembly elections. The case is being heard at The Judicial Magistrate Court 1 in Tirupattur.
