AI in teaching skills instead of a third language in selected secondary schools; The Hindi Teachers Association is against it

The state government has taken steps to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) in skill education instead of third language in 1,652 government high schools in the state under the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) from the academic year 2026-27.

“Samagra Shikshana-Karnataka” (SSK) has issued a circular for appointment of guest teachers for teaching artificial intelligence and for conducting necessary preparations at school level.

However, the Karnataka High School Hindi Language Teachers’ Association has objected to the government’s move and wrote to Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday calling for withdrawal of the circular.

Teaching AI in schools

As directed by the State Government and approved by the Union Government Project Approval Board for 2026-2027, AI skill education is being introduced in a total of 1,642 government high schools, including 1,180 newly approved schools, 381 NSQF approved schools in 2024-25 and 2025-26 and 81 existing single sector schools.

In 81 single-sector schools, currently operating beauty and wellness, retail and apparel sectors have been replaced by artificial intelligence.

In line with the National Education Policy and with the aim of developing employability skills and professional competence among students, it has been proposed that Artificial Intelligence in Skills Education be chosen as a subject in state secondary schools instead of a third language subject.

In addition, she was asked to take necessary steps to deploy third language teachers in schools that introduce AI in teaching skills instead of the third language subject to nearby public schools where there is a shortage of teachers.

The teachers were against it

However, the Karnataka High School Hindi Language Teachers Association, in its letter to the chief minister, said the order would throw their future into darkness.

“Implementing AI course along with third language will help children to learn AI along with languages. Tri-language pattern should continue in Karnataka and the order issued by SSK should be withdrawn immediately,” urged D. Manjunath, president of the association.
