Ahmedabad will host the FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2026 from August 13 to 23, bringing some of Asia’s best young basketball talent to India at a time when the country continues to strengthen its presence on the global basketball scene. The tournament will be only the third time that India will host the continental youth championship and further reinforces Ahmedabad’s growing reputation as one of India’s major multi-sport hubs.
The tournament, announced by the FIBA-Asia Regional Office on Thursday, will feature 16 teams from across Asia competing not only for the continental title, but also for qualification to the 2027 FIBA U19 World Championship in the Czech Republic.
The best four teams of the competition seal their places at the Under-19 World Championship, which will take place in Pardubice from June 26 to July 4 next year.
India does not get many opportunities to host top-level international basketball tournaments, especially World Cup qualifying events. So having Asia’s top under-18 teams play in Ahmedabad for almost two weeks gives the sport a level of visibility that Indian basketball often struggles to achieve.
In the last few years, India has been aggressively promoting itself as a destination capable of hosting major sporting events across disciplines. Ahmedabad became one of the focal points of this strategy.
The city is already home to the massive Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world, and is also part of India’s larger ambitions around the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the country’s confirmed bid for the 2036 Olympics.
Now basketball is joining that growing list.
WHEN LAST INDIA HOSTED FIBA U18 ASIA CUP
This will be the first time in 22 years that India is hosting this tournament.
The last edition held in the country was held in Bengaluru in 2004 when Iran dominated the competition to win their first ever continental basketball title in any category after defeating Korea in the final.
Before that, India hosted the event in Kolkata in 1998, a tournament that is fondly remembered for marking the international debut of Yao Ming before he eventually became one of the biggest global icons in Asian basketball history.
This history alone gives the Ahmedabad edition an interesting layer as youth tournaments like these often become the first big stage for future international stars.
Australia will arrive as defending champions after winning in 2024 in Jordan, while New Zealand will also return after finishing as runners-up. The remaining teams qualify through regional sub-zone tournaments scheduled across Asia over the next few months.
The structure itself is straightforward but intense.
The 16 teams will be divided into four groups of four for the round-robin, with the top three teams from each group advancing to the knockout stages.
For younger players trying to break into elite international basketball, tournaments like these often become career-defining opportunities.
