A week after 270 people died in the accident of Air India (AI) in Ahmedabad, 211 victims have so far been identified through DNA match, while 189 bodies passed to their families, the official said on Thursday (June 19, 2025).
Flight AI-171 bound to London, which carried 242 passengers and crew members, after a trip from Ahmedabad 12th June ran into a medical complex.
The authorities perform DNA tests to determine the identity of the victims because many bodies have been burned out of recognition or seriously damaged.
“Until Thursday in the morning, 211 DNA samples were assigned and 189 bodies handed over to the relevant families,” Ahmedabad Civil Hospital told reporters.
Among the 189 victims whose bodies were handed over, there were 142 Indians, 32 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian. The mortal remains of the seven people who died on Earth were also handed over to their relatives, said Mr. Joshi.
