The drama that unfolded between the TDP and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) last week ahead of the mayoral elections has left citizens and political analysts in the state perplexed.
With the required numbers on its side, the TDP initially appeared not only confident but also reportedly relaxed. Former Minister P. Anil Kumar Yadav seized the opportunity and reportedly entered the scene overnight and pulled back most of the candidates to the YSRCP.
As a result, the TDP leadership led by Minister and Nellore MLA Ponguru Narayana, Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, Party District President and AP Waqf Board Chairman Abdul Azeez and Kotamreddy District Leader Giridhar Reddy allegedly brought them back into their fold and shifted them to an unknown destination.
Corporators belonging to both parties have reportedly been seen switching loyalties, creating confusion on both sides.
The biggest jolt for the YSRCP came on Sunday when the party’s city president Bobbala Srinivas Yadav, who was also its floor leader in the NMC, joined the TDP in the presence of MLA Sridhar Reddy. Another corporator Sheikh Karimulla joined the alliance in the presence of Minister P. Narayana.
The fate of Potluri mayor Sravanthi Jayavardhan was to be decided at a key meeting on December 18 after a majority of corporators belonging to the TDP-led NDA alliance considered a no-confidence motion last week.
She ended the week-long drama by submitting her resignation to the district collector on Sunday, avoiding the need for a proposal. However, she withdrew the ruling alliance and resorted to harassing her party corporators, including women, and announced that she would remain in touch with the public.
