An emotional Deepti thanked the people of Agra for their support.
“It feels like a dream come true. I still can’t sink it in, after so many years of heartbreak, I’m finally back home in Agra with the World Cup. I never imagined such a roadshow happening for me or any other player,” she said.
“If we work hard like this, we’ll keep winning more trophies. When I see all the kids here, I feel like I’ve been able to inspire them.”
India’s World Cup victory earlier this month marked a major milestone in women’s cricket Deepti’s all-round performance was the focal point of the historic campaign. She was named Player of the Tournament after finishing with 215 runs and 22 wickets, including a decisive 58 and five wickets in the final against South Africa in Navi Mumbai.
Earlier for India Today’s sister channel Sports Today, Deepti explained how winning changed her life and visibility around women’s cricket.
“During the tournament, when it actually happened, it still felt like a dream. But once it really sunk in, when I got home and people started talking about it, it finally felt real,” she said.
“Earlier, I could walk around freely, go to malls and places without much notice. But now it’s difficult, you can’t just get out that easily. Even with a mask, people recognize me, which says a lot about how much women’s cricket has grown since the World Cup.”
Deepti’s consistency and influence throughout the tournament made her one of the faces of a new era in Indian women’s cricket. Agra’s huge turnout on Thursday reflected how much their success means to the fans at home.
