Aging, sedimented pipelines have hit Kochi’s water transportation capacity
Studies conducted by French firm SUEZ to assess the condition of Kerala Water Authority (KWA) pipelines in Kochi Corporation have found significant deterioration of pipelines at several locations, particularly in Kaloor and Karuvelipady divisions. Considerable deposits have been observed inside the pipeline, which according to sources is restricting the flow of water. Several pipes running under stagnant water have also been identified as sources of contamination and are slated for replacement. Such pipelines have been identified in Karuvelipad, Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.
The French firm that has taken over the operation and maintenance of water distribution systems in Kochi is carrying out surveys as part of its work. Last year, KWA signed an agreement with SUEZ to optimize water distribution in Kochi. The ₹ 1,141.28 crore project is being financed by the Asian Development Bank. “The overall condition of the pipeline is not good. The pipeline is old and there are deposits in the pipeline such as sand, mud, etc. This reduces the diameter of the pipeline and thus the capacity of the pipeline for water,” said a SUEZ source.
The source also added that the condition of asbestos and cast iron pipes is also bad. “Leaks have been observed from PVC pipes as they are broken in some areas. We will also relocate pipes that go under stagnant water as they are a source of contamination. These are preliminary observations and the full picture will emerge only after all surveys are completed,” the official added.
The company also completed a door-to-door consumer survey in over 2.2 million homes in Kochi Corporation. The survey is expected to be over in another 15 days, a KWA source said. “We expect to receive the network design from the company by November 15, after which we will review it. Implementation and construction will begin from next year,” the source said. Non-destructive testing of reservoirs, gas stations and other infrastructure is also underway. Tank testing at Thammanam, Elamkulam, Fort Kochi and Mattancherry has been completed and results are awaited.
