After the match, an elated Suryakumar Yadav said his next target is the Olympics and the next edition of the T20 World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand.
“The next target is the Olympic gold and the T20 World Cup which is also in that year,” said Suryakumar Yadav after India won the trophy.
On Sunday, March 8, India became the first ever team to defend the T20 World Cup title. India also became the first host nation to win the trophy. This was the third T20 World Cup title, making India the most successful team in the competition’s history.
Cricket at the Olympics
Cricket will return to the Olympics after 128 years, with men’s and women’s events each competing, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed. A total of 90 players will participate in each event. The sport will be played in the T20 format at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Cricket is one of five sports to be added to the Los Angeles Games schedule, alongside squash, flag football, baseball/softball and lacrosse. The qualification criteria for cricket at the Olympics is yet to be finalised. Unlike the Test and ODI formats, nearly 100 countries play T20 International cricket, which could make the qualification process particularly competitive. As hosts, the USA could gain direct entry into the tournament.
The program of events for the Los Angeles Olympic Games was approved by the IOC Executive Board on Wednesday, April 9. The 2028 Games will feature a total of 351 medal events, 22 more than the Paris Olympics. The base quota of athletes will remain at 10,500 and an additional 698 athletes will be split between the five new sports, the IOC said.
