US President Donald Trump mocked New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, saying, “Mamdani, whatever the hell his name is,” while speaking at the America Business Forum in Florida.
Trump took a dig at Zohran Mamdani for his stance on transgender athletes. His statement came a day after Mamdani, a democratic socialist of Indian origin, was elected New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor.
In a speech at the America Business Forum in Miami, Florida, Trump said on Wednesday that when he was elected to his second term on November 5 of last year, the American people had “restored” their sovereignty, but “lost it a little bit” with Tuesday’s mayoral election.
“But we’ll take care of it. Don’t worry about it,” he warned, “you’re watching what’s happening in New York, terrible… I hope it doesn’t happen, but you’ll see.”
“…and Mandami, whatever the hell her name is in New York…thinks it’s awesome to have men playing women’s sports,” Trump said to boos from the audience.
The choice between “communism and common sense”
The US president also said that Americans now face a stark choice between “communism and common sense” after the November 4 election.
Trump also accused Democrats of putting a Communist in America’s largest city.
“If you want to see what the Democrats in Congress want to do to America, just look at the result of yesterday’s election in New York, where their party installed a communist as mayor of the largest city in the country,” he said.
The US president said after Tuesday’s results: “The decision facing all Americans couldn’t be clearer. We have a choice between communism and common sense. Does that make sense to you? Common sense? It’s common sense or communism.”
He said communism didn’t work in the past.
“Our opponents are offering an economic nightmare. We are achieving an economic miracle,” Trump said, adding that while he had previously warned against electing socialists, “we skipped the socialists and put in the communists instead.”
The Republican leader said his opponents are hell-bent on turning America into communist Cuba, socialist Venezuela and “you see what happened to those places.”
Trump warned that Democrats had become “so extreme,” joking that Miami could soon become a “sanctuary” for those fleeing communism in New York.
Despite his attacks, the president expressed affection for his hometown, saying, “I love New York … we had clear signs of trouble because we had a guy named de Blasio.”
Trump was referring to former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, a member of the Democratic Party.
He reiterated that under his leadership the US would not become communist in any way, shape or form.
“We’re going to stop it. We’re going to stop it. Stop the nonsense,” he said, adding that between a communist or a thug, people “took the communist. It’s pretty amazing. We could have done a little better in terms of candidates.”
“But the Communists, the Marxists, the Socialists and the Globalists have had their chance and they’ve brought nothing but disaster. Now let’s see how the Communist does in New York. We’ll see how it turns out,” Trump said.
However, the president added that he “will help them. We want New York to be successful. Maybe we will help them a little”.
Trump has previously warned that Mamdani’s victory would bring “complete and utter economic and social disaster” to New York.
Mamdani attacks Trump
Meanwhile, Mamdani said in his impassioned victory speech on Tuesday that New York “will remain a city built by immigrants, driven by immigrants and, starting tonight, led by immigrants.”
“After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to beat him, it’s the city that gave him birth. And if there’s any way to scare a despot, it’s by removing the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power,” he said to thunderous applause.
“Donald Trump, because I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn up the volume,” he said, adding: “To get to any of us, you’re going to have to get through all of us.”
