Days after citing a security threat as the reason for buying Greenland, President Donald Trump has now raised concerns with aides about Canada’s susceptibility to so-called American rivals in the Arctic, such as Russia and China, NBC News reported, citing current and former U.S. officials.
He went on to say that Canada needs to spend more on its defense. Trump’s efforts have accelerated internal negotiations on a possible deal this year with Canada to strengthen its northern border, the news outlet noted.
“Trump is really concerned that the US continues to drift in the Western Hemisphere, and he is focused on that,” one of the officials told the news outlet.
