After 60 years, Sarvepalli canal is being evacuated to get permanent pattas

After nearly six decades of insecurity, residents displaced by the construction of the Sarvepalli canal are all set to get permanent patta for their rehabilitation sites.

The state cabinet, which met in Amaravati on Thursday, agreed to a proposal to provide permanent pattas to evacuees who had given up their land for the Sarvepalli canal project.

When the news broke, residents living along the canal embankment celebrated, leading to a festival atmosphere.

It may be recalled that Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana had assured the residents a month ago that permanent pattas would be issued soon.

He brought together revenue, irrigation and municipal officials to work out a final and permanent solution to the long-standing problem that had created a sense of insecurity among residents for nearly six decades.

For years, residents lived in fear that their makeshift homes along the canal embankment could be removed at any time. Mr. Narayana personally toured the colony and assured the residents of alternative accommodation with the promise of permanent pattas.

As part of the rehabilitation process, 1,400 families were relocated to Bhagat Singh Colony. Another 1,215 families will soon receive pattas at a convenient location.

Following the cabinet’s decision, residents gathered at four places in Nellore town to celebrate. Some residents performed milk abhishekam to the portraits of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan and Minister Narayana. AP Waqf Board Chairman Shaik Abdul Aziz, Mayor Devarakonda Sujatha and Deputy Mayor P. Roop Kumar Yadav joined the residents in the celebrations.
