In a remarkable shift in adoption trends, more girls than boys have been adopted in Kalaburagi district in the last six years, according to the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Manjula Patil said at a press conference in Kalaburagi on Tuesday that 110 children were taken under the care of the department during 2020-2025, of which 54 were adopted. There were 34 girls and 20 boys among them.
“It is encouraging that people’s mindset is gradually changing and many couples are now applying to adopt girls,” said Ms. Patilová.
Among the 54 adoptions, nine were by foreign couples, reflecting growing international interest in adopting through legal Indian procedures. The remaining adoptions were by parents from Karnataka and other parts of the country, she said.
Ms. Patil said adoption procedures are monitored through departmental authorities to prevent illegal or unregistered adoptions, she added.
The Women and Child Development Department has also launched a month-long campaign across Kalaburagi district to educate the public about the process of legal adoption.
As part of the initiative, awareness programs are held at religious places, educational institutions and public spaces. Officials hold interactive sessions to educate people about legal adoption applications.
Mrs. Patilová emphasized that adoption through proper procedures not only protects the child, but also protects the adoptive parents from future legal complications.
