Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) MR Ajith Kumar on Tuesday gave an explanation to the state police chief over allegations that he tried to interfere in the investigation into the attack on Youth Congress workers by former chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s security forces in Alappuzha in 2023.
The senior officer reportedly denied all the assessments made against him by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was probing the incident and handling the case. The two sub-inspectors who were interrogated by the SIT in connection with the attack on the Youth Congress workers had earlier alleged that Mr. Kumar directed the investigators to hand over the case diary for scrutiny and ordered them to prepare reports so that the case would be closed before it was taken up in court.
The state police chief, who is currently probing the ADGP’s explanation, will later hand over the document along with the SIT report to the home minister. The Ministry of the Interior will then decide on the next course of action.
The development comes ahead of the retirement of Kerala Fire and Rescue Service Director General Nitin Agrawal on July 31. With the post of Director General of Police (DGP) subsequently falling vacant, Mr. Kumar is next in line to be promoted to the rank. However, any disciplinary action taken by the Home Ministry in connection with the case of Youth Congress activists could put a damper on such plans.
