The Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (TGBIE) has announced a series of academic reforms, including changes in assessment patterns, introduction of Activity-Based Learning (ABL) for internal assessment and revised textbooks for first-year intermediate students from the academic year 2026-27.
As part of the reforms, the council restructured the pattern of practical examinations in science subjects – physics, chemistry, botany and zoology. Under the revised system, the practical exams in the first and second years will now carry 15 points, while the theoretical exams will be conducted for 60 points. Previously, exercises were conducted only for 2nd year students for 30 points, theoretical exams for 60 points.
In Mathematics, the Activity-Based Learning Committee introduced internal assessment in Mathematics-A and Mathematics-B, each with 15 marks in the first and second years. The marks in the theory test were reduced from 75 to 60.
Similar reforms were introduced in humanities subjects including business, accountancy, economics, political science, history, geography and public administration. Students will now be allocated 20 points for the Activity-Based Learning internal assessment, while theory exams will be held for 80 points instead of the earlier system of 100 points for theory only.
The board also introduced 20 marks of internal assessment in languages and modern languages, including Telugu, Hindi, English and Urdu, while theory exams were reduced to 80 marks.
A new ACE group covering Accountancy, Business and Economics has also been introduced. The board said the batch will include 20 marks from the Activity-Based Learning internal assessment and 80 marks for theory exams.
A separate question paper will now be developed for MEC Mathematics along with 20 marks allocated for internal assessment through Activity-Based Learning.
The TGBIE further stated that the revised textbooks for 1st year intermediate students have been prepared through subject expert committees and will be implemented from the academic year 2026-27. The new textbooks include diagrams, knowledge boxes, QR codes, Indian knowledge systems and simulations wherever possible. “The distribution of revised textbooks will be completed by June 1,” the board said.
