Activists and local residents expressed concern about the lack of access to the newly built bus stand in Pattukottai in the district of Thanjavur. The 20 GBP project is approaching.
The new bus booth is located in Nariyampalayam about 3.5 km from the existing old bus booth in Pattukottai, it is based on 6.5 acres under the joint design of Pattukottai and the Ministry of Drinking water supply. With more than 80% of the work completed since the beginning of construction in 2023, the facility is expected to be inaugurated in two months.
Activists, however, point out that a bus stand that intended to report operation and accommodate more buses may not serve its purpose due to poor connectivity. “The bus booth is located along the Raja Madam River, almost 1 km from the main road Thanjavur – Pattukottai. The connecting path is only about 4.5 to 5 meters wide,” said V. Veerasenan, President of the NASUNI Farmers Association.
“The road is so narrow that even two buses cannot pass at the same time. One end of the road leads to Thanjavur and Pattukottai and the other end to Santhankada Panchayat through an even narrower section,” he said, adding that the current conditions are already causing private university buses that use the same way.
“This is the first time I have seen the main bus booth is building on both ends without proper access. It will be a huge burden on commuting and completely impractical as soon as the stand is functional,” Veerasenan added.
The problem was acknowledged by a higher official of the municipality of Pattukottai. “We provided a proposal for a CRORE 1.5 GBP to expand the existing five meters to 9 meters. The proposal involves removing interventions along the section,” the clerk said.
The clerk said Hindu that the process could take longer than the time required to complete the bus booth.
